We talked on the phone that morning
and figured out exactly what to do
neither one of us could drive
my folks would have to do

we held each other close
as the sound and picture rolled
you ran your nails across my hand
I wanted more as goosebumps came

There was no sign of the sadness yet to come
it was a perfect day in a perfect time
It was your birthday
felt like mine too

Then I said I loved you
not even knowing what that meant
you hid from me in the lobby
I'll never forget the smile on your face

On the way home I gave you your gift
it was a vhs of the concert you had missed
you were so happy
you watched it three times that night

Some days later we sat on a bench
you said meeting me was the best thing yet
then my ego swelled
but I did not understand the magic on that bench
